New Year Episode
January 2009

Hello!

Welcome to the first episode of the Pick Ontario Newsletter for the year 2009!  We are pleased to offer all users of the PickOntario.ca website valuable information on floral care and trends as well as keeping everyone up to date on the goings-on of the Ontario cut flowers and potted plants industry.

Rose Colour Meanings

Valentine's Day is right around the corner!  Are you looking to express your feelings to that someone special with flowers?  If so, you aren't alone.  Roses are the most popular gift to give on Valentine's Day and the majority of all purchasers choose red.  Why not try something different?

Here are the meanings behind specific rose colours:

Red Roses say "I love You" and also stand for respect and courage.

White Roses mean "You're Heavenly", reverence and humility, innocence and purity, "I'm worthy of you", and secrecy and silence.

Yellow Roses usually stand for joy and gladness but can also say "try to care".

Pink Roses usually stand for joy and gentility.
Deep Pink Roses stand for gratitude and appreciation.
Light Pink Roses mean admiration and sympathy.

Lavender Roses mean "unconscious beauty".

Coral or Orange Roses enote enthusiasm and desire.

Featured Plant: Orchids

Phalaenopsis Orchid
Potted orchids have always been a favorite plant for hobby growers but during the last 5 years, this exotic tropical plant has become a viable commercial crop in Ontario. Two growers in the Niagara area, supply over 15,000 potted orchids a week, 52 weeks of the year, to markets in Canada and the US.

Orchids have long had a reputation as being fussy and difficult to care for. But this is a myth. If one can grow African violets or Boston ferns, then orchids should fit into the same environment. And Ontario's orchid growers are making the home-care process even easier.

CosMic Plants Inc.

NEDC Logo

Cosmic is a word used to express amazement or wonder. It is also an appropriate name for a company that specializes in growing a plant that elicits the same emotions. CosMic Plants' Phalaenopsis Orchids are simply out of this world.

CosMic Plants buys baby orchids from Sion, Anthura and Floricultura in The Netherlands, three orchid breeding stock specialists. The plants spend the first 6 months of their lives in-vitro flasks, before relocating to a spacious greenhouse in Beamsville, Ontario. Approximately, 18 months later the potted orchids are ready for market. CosMic Plants is also the official dealer for Sion orchid stock in North America.
