Breath of Fresh Air at Queen's Park
On Tuesday June 24th, Queen's Park was transformed into a sea of "Local Freshness". Pick Ontario, partnered with Foodland Ontario rallied together in handing out cut flowers in support of buying local flowers and potted plants. Thousands of flowers were handed out during the day. A special recipient of Pick Ontario flowers was the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Featured Flower: Gerberas
Gerberas are long living, cheerful, decorative flowers that are part of the sunflower and daisy family. Having such a long vase life, Gerberas are widely used in the cut flower industry. Cut gerberas are the fifth most used cut flower in the world and a favorite of florists, just next to carnations and roses. Gerbera are also often used as a decorative garden plant. They vary greatly in shape and size. Ontario cut gerberas are available throughout the year and their colours vary from white, light to dark yellows, oranges, pinks, brilliant scarlettes, and deep reds. Often the same flower can have petals of several different colors. Gerberas are great flowers for adding colour to any room or garden. Although 'gerbs' are native to South Africa, we are successful in growing them right here in Ontario.

Featured Grower: Van Geest Bros.
Our Feature Growers is the Van Geest Brothers, who are actually Gerbera growers themselves. The first generation of Van Geest growers started in 1959 in Grimsby, Ontario. The brothers began by growing a variety of potted and cut flowers but it wasn't until 1998 that Gerberas became the focus for the Grimsby greenhouses. Van Geest Gerberas are grown in big pots rather than beds and each plant continually produces flowers for up to 3 years. For more information.....
