Ovarian Cancer Sunflower Campaign
With September being Ovarian Cancer awareness month, pickOntario is proud to be a part of Ovarian Cancer Canada's sunflower campaign. How appropriate that a Sunflower is the Ovarian Cancer Canada's logo! Through September, sunflower bouquets from Flowers by Millgrove are being sold by Longo's with a portion of the proceeds going to Ovarian Cancer research. Longo's as well as Flowers by Millgrove will be donating $1.00 per bundle of sunflowers sold to this great cause. When pickOntario heard of this opportunity, they decided to join in sponsoring the campaign.
Ovarian Cancer Canada has undertaken some key initiatives that have significantly contributed to the advancement and understanding of ovarian cancer in Canada. Innovative programs, support of scientific research and nationwide awareness campaigns have changed the face of the disease.

Sunflowers
Bold and flashy, bright and cheerful, sunflowers are most at home in settings that evoke feelings of frivolity and fun. Sunflowers have ray like petals in joyously colourful blends of yellow and orange-red. Their deeply vibrant, bold colours create an atmosphere of uncomplicated charm. Sunflowers mean adoration and loyalty.... two qualities certain to make a success of any union.
There are over 70 varieties of sunflowers, which are actually from the much larger aster family, but only a handful of sunflower varieties are used in the floral trade. These sunflowers are usually hybrids that have a much longer vase life (up to 2 weeks) than those picked alongside the road. Cut sunflowers are available year round in Ontario but sunflower heads vary in size depending on the time of year with the summer months producing the largest flower heads.

Featured Grower -Flowers By Millgrove
Flowers by Millgrove, a second-generation family owned flower grower, was established in 1957 in Millgrove, Ontario. Fourteen years ago, to diversify the business, owner Jason Adomeit decided to enter the wholesale market. They now buy flowers from Ontario growers, make wonderful bouquets, and sell them to specialty grocery stores throughout Southern Ontario. Using themes and holidays as inspiration, each bouquet is an art form. "Lemon Lime", "Strawberries and Cream", "Wine and Cheese" and "Slice of Orange" bouquets include cut flowers such as Gerberas, Lilies, Sunflowers and locally grown Roses.
